Week 9 Starts/Sits
We’re now officially on to the back half of the fantasy season. Teams on bye this week are ATL, CIN, LAR, and NO. I’m not going to use this article to tell you to start your studs, this is more about taking chances on players who have favorable matchups and hopefully outplay their projections for the week.
QBs – Starts
Jimmy Garoppolo vs. Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals are allowing 26ppg to the QB position which ranks dead last in the league. The addition of Emmanuel Sanders opens things up for everyone which of course will make life easier for Jimmy G.
Mitch Trubisky vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Writing in Mitch as a start makes me vomit a little in my mouth but the Eagles secondary is atrocious. The Bears are struggling but showed some signs last week. The pressure is on him to have a big game, I’ll take a chance that he does it this week.
Gardner Minshew vs. Houston Texans
Minshew has been very impressive as a rookie and is having a very nice season. This week he takes on a Texans defense that is allowing over 23ppg to the QB and will be without JJ Watt which should make Minshew even more comfortable in the pocket.
QBs – Sit
Kyle Allen vs. Tennessee Titans
Kyle Allen is coming off a rough game in week 8 with 0 TD’s and 3 picks. Things won’t get much easier this week against the Titans who have been pretty good against the QB. Winston did throw for over 300 yards and 2 TD’s against them in week 8 but it took 43 attempts and he also had 2 picks and 2 fumbles.
Jacoby Brissett vs. Pittsburg Steelers
Brissett has been a different QB on the road. Averaging just 5.8 yards per pass vs 7.5 at home. The Steelers have allowed 17ppg to the QB and have been stingier at home allowing only 6.1 per attempt vs 8.6 on the road. They also have 21 sacks at home vs 3 on the road.
RBs – Start
Derrick Henry vs. Carolina Panthers
The Panthers have not been great against the run all year and just got gashed this past week against the 49ers. Give me all of the Derrick Henry!
Jordan Howard vs. Chicago Bears
The Bears have not been great against the run since Akeem Hicks went down. I’m sure there is a little more motivation for Howard this week. I expect a heavy dose of Howard and can see a couple TD’s being put up.
Royce Freeman vs. Cleveland Browns
Royce is in a timeshare with Lindsay but he’s been called upon the last few weeks at the goal line. Flacco maybe out the rest of the season which should mean they lean on the run more. The Browns have not been good against the run so Freeman should have a nice day.
RBs – Sit
Kenyan Drake vs. San Francisco 49ers
Drake should be in a unique position where he gets traded and gets heavy volume in his 1st game. The Cardinals are dealing with a bunch of injuries at the RB position. If Drake does get a lot of usage in this game, don’t expect a big game. The 49ers have been very impressive defensively and they’re top 2 against the run.
Mark Ingram vs. New England Patriots
The Patriots defense has been AMAZING this year. Part of that has been a favorable schedule against a lot of unproven offenses but that shouldn’t take away from what they’ve done. They’re #1 against the run and I wouldn’t feel that great having to start Ingram this week.
Sony Michel vs. Baltimore Ravens
This feels like it will be more of a James White/Rex Burkhead type of game. Sony hasn’t been utilized in the passing game much and has been very TD dependent. Baltimore has been pretty good against the run so I don’t expect a big output from Sony.
WRs – Start
Emmanuel Sanders vs. Arizona Cardinals
Sanders played on 82% of the snaps in his 1st game with the 49ers. Arizona is a bad defense. I listed Jimmy G as a start at QB so why not go with his #1 WR as well as a start?
Allen Robinson vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Seems to be a theme here. Pick a WR as a start for the same team that you picked the QB as a start….seems logical. Robinson has been the clear #1 and Trubisky has ultimate trust in him. I see him and Anthony Miller being big here.
John Brown vs. Washington Redskins
John Brown has been getting a healthy amount of looks. He hasn’t had an explosive game and not a lot of TD’s. I expect the TD’s to increase and I think that starts this week.
WRs – Sit
Terry McLaurin vs. Buffalo Bills
The QB situation is up in the air this week. Either way, it screams a sit for me. The Bills have been a tough defense all season and have been stingy against the pass.
Larry Fitzgerald vs. San Francisco 49ers
I expect the 49ers to make it tough on Kyler Murray which obviously will have an effect on Fitz. The 49ers have the best defense against the pass and so I’m not high on Fitz this week.
Courtland Sutton vs. Cleveland Browns
Flacco was not great this year but his strength played to Sutton’s strength. The line for the Browns/Broncos game is one of the lowest of the week. I think the Broncos will rely on a conservative game plan for Brandon Allen and lean on the run.
TEs – Start
Dallas Goedert vs. Chicago Bears
Goedert has been trending up for a few weeks now. He has a TD in each of the last 2 games. The Bears have not been great against the TE this year and Goedert should get some opportunities as the Bears are much better covering WR’s.
TJ Hockenson vs. Oakland Raiders
Hock has not been great recently but the matchup is prime for him to have a big game. The Raiders are the 3rd worst defense against the TE allowing over 16ppg. You assume that most of the focus will be on Kenny Golladay which should leave Hock with some opportunities.
OJ Howard/Cameron Brate vs. Seattle Seahawks
Look, the purpose of a start and sit is to sometimes not state the obvious. Howard has been bad. Brate hasn’t been great either. If there is a time for one of them to do something, it’s now. The Seahawks allow 16ppg to the TE and this game should have enough scoring to give whoever starts an opportunity to have a nice game.
TEs – Sit
Delanie Walker/Jonnu Smith vs. Carolina Panthers
I don’t know who’s starting yet but either way, I don’t love the matchup. The Panthers have held the TE position under 10 points. You’re probably starting either one of these guys but temper expectations.
Jason Witten vs. New York Giants
In week 1, Witten got a TD against the Giants but only had 3 receptions for 15 yards. The Giants typically get gashed on the outside so I see Cooper and Gallup doing the damage. Don’t see a lot of opportunities for Witten here.
Jimmy Graham vs. Los Angeles Chargers
Jimmy Graham just doesn’t look great. Has had some good games but I don’t like him this week against the Chargers. While Adams has been out, the Packers have been utilizing Aaron Jones more and more in the passing game and I expect that to continue this week as the Chargers have defended the opposing TE’s well.
That’s all we got for week 9. Good luck to everyone this week.
