RB Fantasy Points Scored In Relation To Age

In this new series I'm going to examine fantasy points scored in relation to age over a three year sample size, looking at each offensive skill position one by one. I will be moving on to runningbacks who I anticipate having the youngest success rate compared to the other positions. I have broken all the data into year by year positional graphs, making it easy to decipher the optimal age for success at each individual position. The graphs will look at runningbacks in the top twenty in fantasy points scored for each of the past three seasons. I used the players age at the start of that particular season, to make things as uncomplicated as possible. A couple of things that stand out are that there seems to be a youth movement taking place at the runningback position. As the average age of runningbacks in the top twenty PPR scoring dropped from 26.1 years old to 24.9 between 2015-2017, a full 1.2 year age drop which equates to a 4.6% change over that period. I also noticed that Frank Gore is single handily bringing up the annual average age several years, perennially making the top twenty in his thirties, which is an incredible feat in it's own right.

2015 PPR Fantasy Points Scored By Runningbacks

As you can see from the 2015 bar graph the highest rate of success among runningbacks was age 23, 24, and 27, as they  were each represented by three players for accounting for 15% a piece. RB's Aged 21, 22, 26, 28, and 29, all had 1 representative in the top 20 accounting for 5% each. Whereas runningbacks 25, 30, and 32, each had two players a piece in the top twenty in 2015, representing 10% respectively. No age group of backs ran away with the top twenty in fantasy points scored  in 15', as the top three age groups  represented were all equal. RB's aged 23, 24, and 27 all had three representatives in the top twenty as each age group accounted for 15% of the leader board. In 2015 the average age of runningbacks in the top twenty in fantasy points scored was 26.1 years old, a bit older than I had expected.

2016 PPR Fantasy Points Scored By Runningbacks

The 2016 bar graph shows that the majority of fantasy points scored among runningbacks was age 23, and 24, as they were each represented by four players for accounting for 20% a piece. RB's Aged 22, 27, 29, and 33, all had 1 representative in the top 20 accounting for 5% each. Whereas runningbacks aged 21, 25, 26, and 28 each had two players a piece in the top twenty in 2016, representing 10% respectively. The top two age groups of backs (23 and 24) ran away with the top twenty in fantasy points scored in 16', as they doubled the next highest age groups represented. In 2016 the average age of runningbacks in the top twenty in fantasy points scored was 24.9 years old, as there appeared to be somewhat of a youth movement that began in 2016.

2017 PPR Fantasy Points Scored By Runningbacks

In 2017 there were only three age groups with one representative, the groups aged 24, 27, and 34, each accounted for 5% of the top twenty in fantasy point scored. There were also three age groups comprised of two members, they were 21, 23, and 29 year old's as they each made up 10% of the top twenty. The 25 year old group had three runningbacks in the top twenty, which makes up 15% of the 2017 RB leader board. Two different age groupings had four members in the top twenty in runningback fantasy points scored last season. 22, and 26 year old backs each represented 20% of the top twenty in runningback PPR fantasy points scored in 17'. The average age of runningbacks in 2017 among the top twenty in fantasy points scored was 24.9 years old as well, as the youth movement appears to be more than a one year anomaly.
