QB Fantasy Points Scored In Relation To Age
In this new series I'm going to examine fantasy points scored in relation to age over a three year sample size, looking at each offensive skill position one by one. I am going to begin with quarterbacks who I anticipate having an older average success rate than the other positions, with the exception of possibly tightends. I have broken all the data into year by year positional graphs, making it easy to decipher the optimal age for success at each individual position. The graphs will look at quarterbacks in the top twenty in fantasy points scored for each of the past three seasons. I used the players age at the start of that particular season, to make things as uncomplicated as possible. Something that stood out to me is that the results were very diverse, and that no single age group or QB class stood out above the rest. Another thing I found interesting was that the average age for quarterback fantasy points leaders between 2015-2017 was 29.0 years old. If Brady and Brees ever decline in play falling out of the top twenty in fantasy points scored or retire that will significantly lower the average age.
2015 PPR Fantasy Points Scored By Quarterbacks
As you can see from the 2015 bar graph the highest rate for success among quarterbacks was age 26, but for the most part the results were quite even among the top twenty fantasy scoring QB's in 2015. Quarterbacks Aged 21, 23, 24, 25, 30, 32, 34, 35, 36, and 38 all had 1 representative in the top 20 accounting for 5% a piece. Whereas quarterbacks 27, 31, and 33, each had two players a piece in the top twenty in 2015, representing 10% respectively. As I previously had mentioned the 26 year old group of quarterbacks led the way in regards to top twenty in fantasy points in 15'. As they accounted for 20% of the leader board, with four players in the top twenty, doubling the next highest age group. In 2015 the average age of QB's in the top twenty in fantasy points scored was 29.2 years old.
2016 PPR Fantasy Points Scored By Quarterbacks
The 2016 graph looks considerably different from the 2015 graph in regards to there are less age groupings that only had 1 player in them with somewhat of a youth movement taking place. Ages 24, 25, 32, 36, 37, and 39 each had one representative in the top twenty in quarterback fantasy points scored for a 5% showing respectively. QB's that were 26, 28, 31, and 34 in 2016 had two players in the top twenty, each representing 10%. There were two age groups with three members in the top twenty in 2016, the 22 year old, and 27 year old groupings. That accounts for 15% of the top twenty in 16' each, and shows that several young quarterbacks were successful starters at age 22. In 2016 the average age of QB's in the top twenty in fantasy points scored was 28.9 years old.
2017 PPR Fantasy Points Scored By Quarterbacks
The 2017 graph shows similarities to the 2015 graph in the sense that there are more age groups represented with less players in them. Eight age groupings were represented by only one player making them, each responsible for 5% of the top twenty in QB fantasy scoring in 2017, they were age 22, 25, 26, 27, 32, 33, 38, and 40. Three separate age groups accounted for 10% each with two representatives in them age 23, 24, and 35. The leading ages for fantasy points scored by quarterbacks in 2017 was age 28 and age 29, each with a 15% showing on the leader board. In 2017 the average age of QB's in the top twenty in fantasy points scored incredibly was 28.9 years old exactly the same as in 2016.
